Budapest Airport to Receive close to 10 Million Passengers this Year

Budapest’s only commercial airport, announced that it had received a record 9,155,961 passengers last year.
The figure was up 7.5% on 2013, and beat the airports previous record of 8.9 million passengers in 2011.
In addition, there was a marked increase in Non-Schengen traffic, lowering the dependence on European passengers. Last year saw a rise of 36% of such passengers.
Future Growth and Development of Budapest Airport
The airport said in an announcement it was ‘a good basis for further improvement’. 2015 is set to top this record with estimates that it will take at least 9.6 million passengers.
The news will be happily met by the country’s tourism industry
The airport, whose CEO is Jost Lammers, is the largest employer in the south of Hungary.
To aid the growing numbers and the reputation as a major airport, he stated that a €15 million improvement program is to be put in motion this year. The airport will build a maintenance hanger for Hungarian Airline, Wizz Air. Steps to modernise the Instrument Landing System (ILS) will also be made.
Originally called Budapest Ferihegy International Airport, and now known as Ferenc Liszt International Airport, it is located 16 km from the centre of Budapest.
It is the second largest airport in the new EU Member States.
