According to data released by GSMA, an international association of mobile operators and related companies, Latvia has the most competitive telecommunications market in the European Union.
The average cost per minute in the Baltic nation on a mobile is two cents per minute, considerably cheaper than its neighbours Lithuania and Estonia, who come second and third respectively.
The average cost per minute on a mobile in Lithuania is three cents and in Estonia, four cents.
Juris Binde, President of Latvia’s first mobile phone company, LMT, said that the released data reflected the heavy usage of mobile phones in Latvia.
He stated that Latvian people talk more on their phones than the French or Italians.
Indeed, statistics prove his point. The average usage for a Latvian citizen is 354 minutes per month, compared to 297 for the French and 233 in Italy.
Lithuanian people spend an average of 235 minutes per month on mobile phones and Estonian mobile users, 214 minutes.
Latvia has four mobile phone operators. The bulk of subscribers use LMT and another company, Tele2.
